Biographical Information: Martina has been teaching since 2006, and she has worked at HCS Early College since 2007. Her main course focus is English II, but she has created several other courses, such as Public Speaking and AVID Literacy. In addition to these positions at her school, Martina is the technology representative for the English department and co-chairmen for the Junior Civitan chapter starting at HCS Early College High School. To continue her journey as a learner, Martina is currently working toward her Masters in Writing from Coastal Carolina University.

Innovative and interactive writing lessons help students to hone their focus skills and understand the complexities of writing. For each writing assignment developed through the Burnette Writing Process, students work on a few specific focus skills in the following categories: content, organization, style, conventions, format, and challenge. Focus skills can be individualized to meet the needs of each student. For each final draft, students self-assess, reflect, and annotate to demonstrate their understanding of each focus skill. When students truly understand the skills, they continue to use them automatically even after moving on to new skills. The use of focus skills and annotation eliminates plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty. Come and learn how grading can take less time and how two-way feedback can become more meaningful.

Description of Session: Michael Clay Thompson, creator of The Magic Lens resource, will lead professional development on his approach that offers greater clarity for students and teachers. The entire emphasis is on the four-level sentence analysis. Sentence diagramming accompanies the text. Punctuation is dealt with at each level and practice is incorporated at every stage. The goal: Applying a resource which will clarify, simplify, and illuminate the endlessly fascinating complexity of English grammar while making the process thematically accessible to English teachers.

Target Participants:
Teachers who will be working with English I Honors and any other teachers who are interested in learning an approach to teaching language analysis at deep levels while teaching grammar.

Additional Info:
Teachers teaching English I Honors during the 2011-2012 school year will be provided with a teacher's manual and a class set of student materials.

Description of Session: As students progress through school, they will need to move beyond simple comprehension of texts (that is, understanding what they have read and articulating the main points) to analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting ideas in a text. Students will need to know how authors construct meaning and how texts are related to the historical, social, and rhetorical contexts in which they are written. Understanding how authors write from a particular context and perspective is only one element of reading rhetorically. Students must also consider an author's claims and analyze how he/she uses evidence to construct an argument. In high school and college, students are expected to read more sophisticated arguments with little to no support. For this reason, we must strategically teach our students how to read rhetorically and write analytically to better prepare them for rigorous academic environments."

Topics will include but not be limited to the following: managing student writing; revising student essays; incorporating visuals, graphics, and strategies to organize and to facilitate student writing; designing “systems” for introducing, reading, and discussing novels; integrating HSAP review into the core curriculum; and teaching vocabulary. Participants will have opportunity to design their own activities using works they teach.

Session: Critical Reading and Thinking Strategies

Biographical Information: Jonathan LeMaster is an English and AVID Elective teacher at El Cajon Valley High School in the Grossmont Union High School District. In addition to teaching students, Jonathan serves as a literacy coordinator at his site. Jonathan is the author of AVID's publication Critical Reading: Deep Reading Strategies for Expository Texts and he is the author of AVID Weekly--an online literacy resource designed to help secondary teachers implement effective literacy instruction.

Jonathan LeMaster received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from San Diego State University in 2001. Later, in 2007, he earned his Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Writing Studies also at San Diego State University. Jonathan LeMaster has taught freshman and sophomore composition classes for the Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies at San Diego State and occasionally speaks to aspiring teachers who are interested in rhetorical reading and writing.

Jonathan is an National Staff Developer for AVID Center and consults with a number of districts on school-wide literacy efforts.

Jonathan LeMaster said the following about students in middle school and high school: "I believe that every student can learn the skills necessary to perform well on secondary and post-secondary reading and writing tasks. If we challenge students and make a real effort to support their learning, they will develop into confident, capable students who will--perhaps for the first time--reach high levels of success."

Session: The Magic Lens for English I Honors

Biographical Information: Michael Clay Thompson is the 2010 recipient of the Richard W. Riley award from South Carolina Consortium for Gifted Education. Over a period of thirty years, he was a classroom teacher, middle school head and academic, and now he is a full-time author and consultant. An acclaimed speaker and workshop presenter, through his teaching, books, and presentations, Michael Clay Thompson has inspired thousands of students and educators with a new love of language and literature.

He received his bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University, studied for gifted education accreditation at Mars Hill College, and obtained his MA from Western Carolina University. During his teaching career he taught in schools in Indiana, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Gifted Children and is an online instructor in Language Arts for the Northwestern University Gifted Learning Links program . He has been a faculty member of the Wake Forest University Summer Institute for Gifted Education, also the University of North Carolina/Charlotte Summer institute for Gifted Education and The Cullowhee Experience.

He has served on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of Gifted & Talented and on the regional Board of Advisors to the North Carolina/South Carolina Future Problem Solving Program. He has been consultant to the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William and Mary, consultant and Lead Scholar for the National Javits Project for Language Arts, and President of the Indiana Gifted Association.

Biographical Information: Having served as teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of instruction, and superintendent, Dr. Danny McPherson retired from the public schools of North Carolina in June 2007 only to return to his greatest professional joy — the classroom.

McPherson quickly admits that he believes his life’s service is to teach. Now in his fifth year with Horry County Schools, McPherson teaches English II, English III, AP Language, and AP Literature at Loris High School.

McPherson and his wife, Diane, have been married 31 years. Their two daughters followed in their father’s footsteps; both are elementary teachers. The McPhersons recently added their first grandchild, Noah, who is almost six months old.

In addition to school, McPherson especially enjoys serving in his church and raising cattle on his family farm.

Description of Session: Due to the curricular flexibility in designing literary units in an AP English Literature course, teachers often question how to best prepare students for the demands of the multiple choice questions and the depth of analysis required in the writing. Participants in this abbreviated workshop will discuss writing strategies and activities that have proven successful as well as ways to familiarize students with the expectations on the multiple choice section. In addition, participants will share challenges and perceived barriers to student success, collaboratively developing solutions to try. Teachers are encouraged to bring questions, concerns and assignments to share.
